Within the academy we study all forms of Theatre Dance, Drama and Performance arts

Ballet

Ballet is taught to pupils as part of their dance training at the academy. Ballet teaches poise, elegance and develops a strong technical base in which other styles can be developed from. Although ballet is not compulsory within the school we encourage all dance students to take this subject. At Trapdoor Theatre Academy we teach the International Dance Teachers Association syllabus. This develops a strong, intellectual dancer, while also seeing the importance of presentation and performance skills. Students take graded exams focusing on technique and medals which focuses on performance and presentation.

Tap

Much fun can be achieved as young children can hear the sound they can make when tapping their toes. This soon progresses as the students begin to develop understanding of sound and rhythm and different dance styles. Here at the academy we teach the International Dance Teachers Association syllabus and students take both graded exams and medal tests. This is a newly launched syllabus which is very progressive and stretches the students in both technique and performance, teaching various styles.

Theatre dance

Here at the academy we teach both Theatre Craft and Modern Jazz. These are taught on rotation once they have taken an exam in Theatre Craft they will then focus on Modern Jazz. We feel that this is the best way to make sure that all students experience both styles of dance. In both cases they work towards exams with the IDTA

Theatre Craft

Students get to appreciate various musical theatre styles. Learning dances from shows such as Grease, Lion King, Chicago etc. The carefully designed syllabus helps the body to prepare physically, stimulating imaginations and performance. The students will learn to dance with various hand props, while developing suppleness and characterisation.

Modern Jazz

In this subject students will develop the flexibility and the strength required to demonstrate emotion through dance. They will learn about expansion and relaxation making them more varied dancers. They will learn to appreciate various styles and rhythms.

Freestyle

These classes are completely for enjoyment, students get the chance to dance songs that are in the charts, learning the most up to date moves. Students can take medal test with the International Dance Teachers Association.

Acting

Here at the academy we have a strong acting department. All classes begin with basic drama skills, helping to build confidence and self-esteem. Students will learn valuable performance techniques, including: character building, vocal projection, diction, improvisation, devising and script work. These classes are especially designed to be great fun! Once these fundamental skills are mastered students get the chance to work towards exams with London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. By working through the grades the students can also gain UCAS points: Grade 4 is a GCSE equivalents and Grade 6 is an A level.

Performance arts

This is an innovative class that gives the students the chance to demonstrate their achievement in a wide range of skills. For example

  • Acting
  • Singing
  • Dancing
  • Mime
  • Stage fighting
  • Performing as a comic
  • Script writing
  • Make up
  • Hair design
  • Set design
  • Lighting design
  • Choreography
  • Direction

Students have the opportunity to work through the graded syllabus with Trinity Guildhall. This allows them to focus on two skills per grade. This is a great class where our students find a sense of achievement and enjoyment, when developing their skills within the performing arts industry.

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is one of the fastest growing areas of interest within the performing arts. In this class students develop their skills in singing, acting and movement. This is a great class and allows students to become more versatile performers. In the lessons students will study various musical’s and styles of musical theatre suited to their age. They will have the opportunity to work towards solo and group graded exams with Trinity Guildhall.

Singing

We offer private lessons in singing. This is a great way to develop technique and skill on a personal level. Students can work towards exams with Trinity Guildhall and later take the IDTA performers certificate.

Private lessons

Here at the academy we offer private lessons in all subjects. Many students who wish to follow a career in the industry use these as a fast track through the grades, or as a way of developing an area that they are most weakest in, or audition prep. These are personal and are directed to the individual needs of the student.
